Passengers with Reduced Mobility Seat Design

Delta Flight Products, in collaboration with AirForAll, a consortium of design and disability advocate organizations based in the UK, have developed two aircraft seats, a Domestic First-Class version and Economy Class version, capable of retaining a customer’s personal wheelchair, providing a more dignified onboard experience for the passenger.

Both versions feature two modes, a typical seating mode and a PRM mode that quickly and smoothly converts to accommodate wheelchairs. The transformation takes roughly 90 seconds as the seat retracts, making room for a powered wheelchair to lock securely in place. The design also keeps typical passenger amenities like the headrest and tray table, and maintains a consistent aesthetic.

Accessible Lavatory

DFP recently debuted another first-of-its-kind – an accessible-forward lavatory. The lavatory includes a unique door opening located near the boarding door and a fixed panel that can be unlatched to accommodate entry of an onboard wheelchair with maximum privacy from the aircraft cabin.

The lavatory features a touchless design and the ability for the passenger to easily access additional functions, such as the sink, prior to returning to their wheelchair. Lighting in the lavatory supports persons of low vision or color sensitivity and DFP is exploring future options such as a “smart mirror” that could close caption PA announcements for persons of low or no hearing and display tactile symbols for persons with low or no vision.
